Babies and children who survive multiple experiences of attachment disruption, trauma and separation very often face profound and complex difficulties, which are described by traditional medical and mental health paradigms as ‘depression’, ‘anxiety’, ‘behavioural problems’ or ‘defiance’. As therapists trying to support these children, we often feel paralysed and hopeless when our attempts to use traditional talking therapies or medication fail.
Inspired by the findings of cutting edge trauma research – this one day training course offers delegates an opportunity to re-frame the mental health needs of troubled children so that we can understand their presentation through the lens of Developmental Trauma. Developmental Trauma is set of complex difficulties affecting a child’s sensory systems, attachment, capacity for regulation, identity and cognitive abilities. By understanding how to assess and identify Developmental Trauma, and develop a trauma-informed therapeutic plan, therapists will experience a renewed sense of hopefulness and efficacy in creating change for traumatised families.
