Understanding attachment and an introduction to therapeutic parenting
Trainer: Dr Kathryn Whyte; Clinical Psychologist
The focus will be on understanding what attachment is and why attachment security is important for children’s development as well as the impact of different (unhealthy) parent behaviours on babies’/children’s development. You will be introduced to some of the foundation skills of therapeutic parenting – the importance of acknowledging and naming children’s feelings and children’s behaviour as communication of their thoughts and feelings. We will think together about the importance of knowing your own (and your partner’s/team colleagues’) strengths and vulnerabilities in relationships and will start practising some of the strategies for parenting children who have experienced attachment disruption and developmental trauma.
