How to build emotional regulation in vulnerable children
Vulnerable and troubled children are easily triggered into feelings that simply overwhelm them. Their ‘window of tolerance’ is much smaller than other children’s, meaning that small things can push them into ‘big’ fight/flight/freeze behaviours. This can cause serious problems both at home and at school, and leave the child feeling ashamed of themselves and hopeless about the future. This workshop looks at how to identify what each child can tolerate, and how to expand their capacity to manage their big feelings and behaviours.
Who this course is for
This workshop is for therapists, counsellors, support workers, youth workers and anyone working in a therapeutic role with children. No formal mental health training is required. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
- To understand what a child’s ‘window of tolerance’ is, and how it maps on to their brain development.
- To learn and practice a range of strategies which enable children to better regulate their feelings
- To consider the power of the adult-child relationship in extending a child’s ability to cope with distress
